Get in the Know about Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is a viral disease that affects the liver, causing inflammation and swelling. It can range from a short term mild illness to a chronic, life-long condition which can result in cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) or liver cancer. It is primarily spread through contact with the blood of an infected person, and a large percentage of patients don't experience symptoms. Today, over 3 million US residents are infected with Hep C, with approximately 17,000 new cases each year.*
Hep C is diagnosed by performing a blood test. Depending on the extent of liver damage, additional blood tests may be performed and patients may even need a liver biopsy.
At our Hepatitis C Clinic, we are on the forefront of Hep C treatment. Now, FDA-approved treatments are easier and more effective than ever. Direct acting, antiviral drugs are now available in oral treatments (no injections), for a shorter duration, and nearly 100% effective with minimal side effects.
Again, most patients with Hep C will not experience symptoms, or may mistake symptoms for something less serious, so make sure you are proactive in your health care. Check our our Hepatitis C page for more information on the disease.
