Hepatitis C is a viral disease that affects the liver, causing inflammation and swelling. It can range from a short term mild illness to a chronic, life-long condition which can result in cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) or liver cancer. It is primarily spread through contact with the blood of an infected person, and a large percentage of patients don't experience symptoms. Today, over 3 million US residents are infected with Hep C, with approximately 17,000 new cases each year.*

Hep C is diagnosed by performing a blood test. Depending on the extent of liver damage, additional blood tests may be performed and patients may even need a liver biopsy.
