Find a ProviderWhat is food intolerance?
Food intolerance is characterized by trouble digesting certain types of foods. Food consists of proteins, nutrients, carbohydrates, fats, and naturally occurring toxins that enhance flavor and smell. A few of these could cause signs of food intolerance. However, food intolerance is not the same as an allergic reaction, in which even a small amount of a particular food may prompt a mild to serious immune system response. Food intolerance usually forms over time and may arise when you overeat a type of food too often. If you want more information on food intolerances and how they may affect your gastrointestinal health, call Washington Gastroenterology to request an appointment. We offer treatment for food intolerances in Washington and can help you or your family members manage this condition efficiently.
What are some symptoms and causes of food intolerances?
Multiple symptoms can result from food intolerances. Some of the most common include:
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Joint pain
- Night sweats
- Tiredness
- Skin issues (such as rashes and eczema)
- Bloating
- Throwing up
- Swelling beneath the eyes
- Diarrhea
Food intolerance is unique to you and is caused by foods typically digestible for most other individuals. Some of the most widely seen causes include:
- Natural chemicals in some vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices
- Vast array of artificial additives, preservatives, and colors used in packaged foods
- Some foods, such as kidney beans or chickpeas, that have a toxic effect when consumed raw
- Certain natural chemicals, like fructose
- Insufficient amount of enzymes specific for the digestion of particular foods
- Items high in histamine (like aged or fermented foods)
Our Washington Gastroenterology specialists can help you discern which food items might trigger the condition.
How are food intolerances diagnosed?
The pattern and type of symptoms can help identify an intolerance to food and distinguish it from a food allergy. Keeping a precise journal of your food habits and successive symptoms can allow you to determine which foods might be causing these reactions. As soon as the aggravating food is established, you will be advised to temporarily remove it from your diet under a provider's supervision. The Washington Gastroenterology digestive health providers will then check you for progress or relief from symptoms. After that, the suspected trigger is reintroduced into your diet to confirm the diagnosis.

Very friendly and helpful to me , fast service too .
The whole staff was wonderful. Very caring and compassionate. The only place to go for colonoscopy as they make it so easy and comfortable for you.
Couldn't ask for a better doctor. He was great at our consultation. Answered any and all questions that pertained to my situation. When it came time for my procedure I felt like I was in great hands. I highly recommend Dr. Jeremiah and his staff.
Dr Moussan is the Greatest GI doctor. He knew when it was time for me to have surgery for an intestine resection. A previous doctor from another health group didn’t follow my case as reported by two of their PA’s. (ie, 3 episodes of severe night sweats, waking up as if someone threw me in a swimming pool with my bed; severe chills inside out; and unexplained high fever of 103.) Dr Moussan referred me to a surgeon who told me that he was shocked to see that I was even walking let alone able to go to work. I am deeply Grateful to Dr Moussan and his staff to follow me in my diagnosis. Highly Recommended!
