Find a ProviderWhat exactly is ileitis?
Ileitis is a condition that manifests in swelling or discomfort in the ileum, the end of one's small intestine that connects to one's large intestine. Effects of ileitis may encompass any of the following:
- Diarrhea
- Cramping or aching in one's abdomen, or fistulas (abnormal openings that grow from one part to another of the intestine)
- Loss of weight
Ileitis can result from several diseases, though Crohn's disease is the most common. Other causes can be infections, side effects of ischemia, NSAIDs, and unusual growths. If you require care for ileitis in Washington, help is near. Get the treatment you deserve by consulting with a gastrointestinal specialist at your local Washington Gastroenterology location as soon as possible.
How can ileitis be diagnosed?
Diagnosing the cause of ileitis is critical to effectively addressing this GI concern and the treatment strategy decided by your provider. Your GI provider will assess your medical background and perform a thorough physical exam. A set of exams might also be ordered to confirm the diagnosis, which may incorporate stool analysis, X-rays, barium X-rays of the small intestine, CT scan, colonoscopy (a narrow lighted tube inserted into the anus for a close examination), and biopsy.
If you feel that ileitis may be the source of your pain, get in touch with Washington Gastroenterology to request a consultation with a local GI provider who can develop an appropriate plan for treatment.
How is ileitis treated?
Based on the results of the diagnostic exams, ileitis may be treated and managed with medications like antibiotics, corticosteroids, antidiarrheal and immune-suppressing drugs, and dietary supplements to help calm inflammation and manage associated symptoms. A surgical procedure might be considered if symptoms cannot be controlled with medications or if complications develop. A surgical procedure may also be necessary to remove any diseased area or address intestinal bleeding. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly, consuming nutritious foods, and quitting smoking is essential.

The whole process seems daunting if it’s your first scope but it’s easy with the great team that works with Dr O. Of course the prep is the worst part but after that the procedure went well and without complaints. I don’t recommend 1st case as it will get you up in the middle of the night to complete dose 2. All in all, it was a smooth process.
The staff and physicians are all professionals, caring and understanding. I recommend anyone who has issues with pain in the intestinal track to see treatment at this facility.
Everyone is so nice there, Front desk, RN, MA, Doctor they really make you feel friendly.
Everyone was very kind and helpful. So that I could have the best experience possible before, during, and after my procedure.
Had a routine medicine check up. All went well. Was also reminded of it being time for my next procedure. And a few helpful ways to take my medicine at better times. Thank you
